April Ross
April Ross is one of only a few female beach volleyball athletes who have won medals in multiple Olympics. Alix Klineman, playing for the first time in Tokyo's Olympics, will try to earn her third Olympic medal. Ross's aim is to get her first Olympic Gold. As she turns 39, it could be Ross' last chance to take home the gold medal at an Olympics. Her confidence is high, however. Ross stated to NBC Boston that if they play their best, and even play well her team will be able to win the gold medal. It's also going to be a matter of chance. Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she resided with her parents and sister. Ross played in numerous sports while attending Newport Harbor High School. She played basketball and ran the track as well as her indoor volleyball exploits as a pre-collegiate athlete. While she did well when playing indoors however, it was evident that her performance was above average. As a high school volleyball career in her university profile, she played as an outside-hitter, middle blocker and setter. She was named by the Gatorade National Circle of Champions Player of the year in 1999, for her performance. The 2000 Orange County Athlete of the Month award was also won by her in volleyball. Ross and Klineman might have begun working together in 2017, but Ross was an experienced player at the beach before they teamed up. She has won numerous events, one of which was with a legendary volleyball player. Between 2007 and 2013, she was partnered with Jennifer Kessy, who is now her coach. Kessy's teammate Ross, who took home the title of world champion alongside Kessy in 2009, was also significant on the international stage. At the 2012 Olympic Games, they received a gold medal. They were beaten out for the gold medal by the legendary group comprising Misty and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). Ross Walsh was Walsh Jennings new partner after May-Treanor's resignation. The pair won bronze in the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. Following high school, and for a few several years prior to hitting the beach as a professional Ross was a ball with the Trojans of USC as an collegiate. This was an impressive run for Ross at the college level. As a freshman in 2000 she fought her way to Pac-10 and NCAA The Freshman of the Year awards and earned an All-American. In addition, she helped her Trojans to make it to the Final Four. In her sophomore season she suffered a devastating personal loss and still managed to earn the honor of being named an All-American. Through the two years she played for the Trojans, she helped them to win two consecutive titles. In 2003-2004, Ross was named the best female volleyball player on the collegiate scene in the United States according to The Honda Sports Award. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Unfortunately, Ross mom Margie was not able to witness her daughter ascend to the highest levels of beach volleyball superstardom. Margie, Ross's mother, passed away in 2001 when Ross was a USC sophomore. Her breast cancer had been diagnosed. She is devoted to her parents who passed away. Margie is a source of inspiration throughout her life, as well as on the beach.
